Caterpillar has planned to market its used diesel engines in less-regulated markets, having equipped the engines with solutions that will allow them to function in these environments

Diesels engines classified as Tier 4 are equipment from manufacturers that significantly limit emissions of oxides of nitrogen, particulate matter, hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide, developed according to the latest US Environmental Protection Agency emission standards.

Caterpillar introduced its Tier 4 certified products in 2011. Since then, it has distributed more than 82,000 pieces of these equipments in North America, Europe, Japan and Australia.

According to the company, its Tier 4 interim diesel engines between seven litres and 32 litres capacity, of 30kW and 895kW, respectively, can now operate in lesser regulated countries with a modification process package.

The package developed by Caterpillar removes secondary-treatment processes from the machine and commercial engine configurations. These packages would be marketed through dealers in countries with relaxed regulations on gas and fuel emissions in 2014.

Caterpillar’s industrial power systems division vice president, Ramin Younessi, said, “Tier 4 used equipment migration is a complex issue. Challenges persist due to diverse emission regulations in different regions. Dealers have to be ready to get trained and help customers understand how to operate these next generation products.”

Caterpillar said it is collaborating with dealers in these markets, giving them access to service training, parts stock, service tools and product information that would prepare them for the migration process.

“Tier 4 final products won't be far behind the interim products, which is why the strategy we've developed focuses on a solution for present and future customers,” said Younessi.
