Zambia starts construction on US$285 million high-voltage power lines

Zambia has begun work on two high-voltage electric power transmission lines, estimated to cost US$285 million collectively, which are expected to feed new mining and agricultural projects

Christopher Mubemba, director of transmission at Zambia’s national power utility firm ZESCO explained, “These two 330 kV lines are expected to provide power to manganese mining projects and cotton processors.”

This venture sees Zambia, Africa’s top copper producer, diversifying and providing investment into other minerals.

Working with the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, ZESCO has already agreed the financing for the projects, which will supply the northern and eastern parts of the country.

Mubemba said, “Following commencement in June, the projects should be completed within 18 months.”
