Scatec Solar has awarded South Africa’s Raubex Infra two service contracts for its new solar power plants in the country
The South African construction firm will carry out civil and electrical works at the Linde and Dreunberg plants, to be built in the Northern Cape and Eastern Cape provinces respectively.
Norwegian solar energy provider Scatec Solar was one of 28 independent power producers that signed contracts with the South African government late in 2013 for a project that is expected to see an initial 1,400MW of renewable energy being added to country’s energy mix.
The plants together would produce 115MW of power and is scheduled for completion in mid-2014, company sources said.
The electricity generated by these plants would then be sold to state-owned Eskom through a 20-year power purchase agreement.
According to a statement by Raubex Infra, the projects would be executed by its Scatec Solar’s power and energy infrastructure projects unit. The work would involve establishing borrow pits for gravel, bulk earthworks, fencing, security systems, electrical cabling, connections and the installation of a medium voltage cabling system from the transformer stations to the sub-station that feeds to the Eskom network.
Raubex Infra would also be responsible for overall site management. Business unit manager Charles Deacon said, “This is the first time that we are involved in installing solar tracker systems. Most South African photovoltaic (PV) plants have solar panels mounted at a fixed inclination. However, Scatec Solar has specified the installation of the tracker systems for the Linde and Dreunberg plants, allowing a more efficient use of the modules.”
