Sudan, Egypt and Libya have agreed to enhance cooperation in the mineral resources and mining sector in an attempt to serve the economic interests of the three countries
A meeting among the three countries focussing on the mining sector took place in Khartoum last week. It was attended by the Sudanese minerals minister Kamal Abdullatif, the Egyptian minister of petroleum and mineral resources Osama Kamal and the Libyan minister of industry Suleiman Ali Al-Fitory.
The meeting discussed establishment of a joint mining fund to finance the projects in the Arab countries through the Arab League and to study the better exploitation of the resources.
Sudanese minerals minister Kamal Abdullatif said, “The three countries have enjoyed deeply-rooted ties and share natural geological similarities together with common interests. It will be extremely beneficial for the three countries to come together and cooperate in serving the common interests and welfare of the people of the region.”
The minister also noted that there were rich geological experiences between Sudan and Egypt.
Osama Kamal, the Egyptian minister, for his part, disclosed that Egypt has set up three axis to upgrade the mining sector through clear polices and attract investment in the sector.
Libyan industry minister Suleiman Ali Al-Fitory reiterated his country’s keenness to achieve the cooperation between Sudan, Egypt and Libya in the field of mineral wealth, stressing the importance of uniting the visions, setting a timeframe and following up what has been agreed upon by the three countries.
Al-Fitory further called for conducting detailed studies for the mineral resources and how to better exploit them, affirming the importance of exchanging information and setting up a mineral and investment map.
