South African construction company Murray & Roberts has been awarded a US$386.9mn five-year mining contract by Kalagadi Manganese

South Africa’s Kalagadi Manganese Pty Ltd has been exploring the Kalahari Basin for manganese. The company owns new order mining rights on three farms, believed to hold more than 960mn tonnes of manganese ore.

Murray & Roberts chief executive Henry Laas said, “This award will further bolster the recent growth in our global Underground Mining platform order book. This growth is encouraging, considering that the global commodity cycle is still depressed.”

The global Underground Mining platform provides specialist engineering, construction and operational services in the underground mining sector, explained Haas. Most key commodities are represented in the platform’s order book and current portfolio of projects. In the medium term, an upturn is expected in the commodity cycle, which will present significant growth potential to the Global Underground Mining Platform, he added.
