The mining division of tools and tool systems manufacturer Sandvik Group has been awarded a major materials handling contract in South Africa

The project includes engineering, supply and installation of two bucket-wheel stacker/reclaimers with a capacity of up to 6,800 tonnes per hour and two shiploaders with a capacity of up to 11,000 tonnes per hour, for coal handling.

The contract, valued at more than US$70mn, was booked in Q2 2015. Upon execution, it will contribute to Sandvik Mining’s business for a period of three years – from 2015 up to 2017.

Sandvik Mining is a business area within the Sandvik Group and a supplier of equipment, tools, service and technical solutions for the mining industry worldwide. It supplied five diesel-powered drill rigs to Aveng Moolmans for nickel mining in South Africa six months ago and also tested its recently launched continuous mining machine in the country.

With approximately 12,000 employees, the mining business has sales of about US$3.2bn in 2014. The group employs about 47,000 across 130 countries and had sales of close to US$10.5bn last year.
