Continental Coal has plans to increase production capacity at its Penumbra mine in South Africa to 63,000 tonnes per month by November 2013

The company has revealed this plan after a recent upgrade at the mine. A permanent ventilation shaft was commissioned at the Penumbra mine last month.

Continental Coal CEO Don Turvey said, “The Penumbra project has established itself as a model project from design through development and is now aiming for steady state production.

“We had to hold back on production due to ventilation constraints up to the end of August 2013 but the successful commissioning of the ventilation shaft will now allow us to move towards full design capacity.”

The CEO also said that the experience gained during the Penumbra project execution will stand the company in good stead when it begins development work at South Africa’s De Wittekrans in future.
