Nature tourism demand sparks investment drive at Rwandan hotel

Serena Hotel Group is set to invest US$10 million in the construction of a new lodging facility at its property in Kinigi, Rwanda

Situated in the country’s Northern Province, the enhanced property will target the high-end market and will look to benefit demand in a region that has become known for its gorillas.

Serena acquired 27 hectares for the construction of the lodge at the cost of $1 million.

“The facility in Kinigi will provide lodging services to tourists who come to see gorillas and will offer extra tourism activities such as bird watching,” said Serena country manager Charles Muia.

Serena Kigali has already received a facelift to the tune of $20 million, which included the construction of 47 new rooms, the introduction of a conference facility, a new business centre and the remodelling of the reception area.

With more than 148 rooms in Serena Kigali and 66 rooms in Lake Kivi Serena, on average the occupancy rate per year has been 72 per cent, making the hotel an important player in the country’s hospitality industry.

Serena Hotel Group is one of only two hospitality companies in the country to offer five-star hotel accommodation.
