Tanesco prepares for restructuring

The reason behind Tanesco restructuring is that Tanzania needs abundant power supply and a structured organ to maintain it. (Image source: pwever/Flickr)

The Tanzania government will restructure the Tanzania Electricity Supply Company (Tanesco) in an attempt to improve its performance and promote private sector investment

The company has already started drafting proposals on how they want the transformation to be executed and by the end of November the management will present a draft to the ministry of energy and minerals for review.

The minister for energy and minerals, Sospeter Muhongo, said, “All Tanesco zonal managers have been tasked to go and collect views from people on how they want the utility to be.

“By November this year, the ministry and Tanesco management will meet to discuss on how we can transform the utility in accordance to the views of the public.”

Muhongo added that for Tanzania to restore its pride as an industrial hub in the East African region it needed to have an “abundant and reliable power supply as well as a structured organ that will be overseeing the entire operations for prosperity of the country.”

A Tanesco statement said, “For years, experts have been advising the government to unbundle Tanesco and give it a new structure that will ensure accuracy, sustainability and prosperity in the energy sector.”

A prominent businessman and member of the Presidential Investors Roundtable, Ali Mufuruki, said, “The government has been managing the energy sector for 50 years. In the past 20 years the performance of the energy sector has faced a drastic drop, which means the government is overloaded and it needs the private sector to take lead in the sector to reduce the burden.”
