Ghana signs US$60mn power transmission deal with South Korea

The government of Ghana has signed a US$60mn loan agreement with South Korea for the construction of a 185 km-long 330kV power transmission line in the West African nation

The line will run from Prestea to Kumasi and will improve power supply from the south of Ghana to the north. The transmission project will be handled by GS Engineering and Construction, and Samsung C&T. It will be financed through a concessional loan facility from the Export-Import Bank of Korea.

Ghana's minister of power Kwabena Donkor said the project has come at the right time, as the country has been facing many hurdles within the power sector and the country is striving to emerge as a major energy powerhouse in the sub-region.

According to leading power officials in Ghana, the transmission project would greatly help in strengthening the power supply in the country as well as reduce transmission losses from 4.5 per cent to three per cent. This would eventually enhance penetration and supply of power to the hinterland of Ghana too.
