World’s largest geothermal plant commissioned in Kenya

The government of Kenya has commissioned the world’s largest geothermal plant, the Olkaria IV, which has a generating capacity of 140MW

According to government officials, the plant will help reduce power deficits in the country by nearly 30 per cent. President Uhuru Kenyatta announced that he would commission another 140MW plant in December 2014.

Kenya’s increased investments in geothermal energy is expected to help the nation reduce its dependence on fuel generators and reduce the cost of power by 30 per cent per home, stated local reports.

Kenyatta assured the citizens that cost of production of goods llike maize flour, sugar and cement would reduce, with the introduction of clean energy generation. In addition, cheaper and reliable electricity supply will also attract investors to Kenya and the government has already demarcated three industrial zones near Olkaria.
