Voltalia, renewable energy producer and service provider, has obtained permits to develop two hydropower plants of 9.8MW and 7.2MW in Morocco’s Middle-Atlas region
The announcement came in parallel to the Photovoltaica congress of renewable energies in Marrakech from 13 – 15 February 2018.
These permits follow technical approvals from the National Bureau for Electricity and Drinking Water regarding the connection of the plants to the national grid. The projects also received approval from the concerned Water Basin Agencies.
The project is in line with the Moroccan government’s goal to boost energy production across the country. Mohammed VI, King of Morocco, said, “Morocco has no choice but to strengthen its local energy production capacity and pave the way for promising investments in energy supply. It must also pursue resolutely efforts to make alternative and renewable energies the keystone of national energy policy.”
Addressing the electricity demand across the country, the company said that the projects aim to help in meeting domestic energy demand among Moroccan citizens.
Voltalia said that the electricity produced is set to be sold under long-term private PPAs, which are under negotiation with corporate clients.
“These permits come as recognition of the extensive work done over the past three years by our Moroccan team,” said Sébastien Clerc, CEO of Voltalia.
Voltalia is an international player in the renewable energy sector. The company produces and sells electricity generated from wind, solar, hydro and biomass power plants and owns a total installed capacity of 508MW.
