Spanish clean energy company GRI Renewable Industries announced the opening of a US$26mn wind turbine tower production facility in Cape Town, South Africa
The facility, located in the Green Technology Industrial Park, stretches across 12,000 sqm and has the capacity to produce 120 turbines annually, stated company officials.
Javier Imaz, CEO of GRI, said, “Our investment in this new state-of-the-art wind turbine tower production facility clearly demonstrates our long-term commitment to South Africa and also positions GRI Wind as open to business and willing to partner with local enterprises in order to develop sustainable wind energy facilities in South Africa.”
South Africa’s power needs have been stretched, as the Eskom facility is working overtime to provide power for emergent businesses and to homes, stated local reports.
The country is actively seeking renewable energy solutions to alleviate an impending power crisis, and has initiated an Integrated Resource Plan. According to the plan, the nation aims to produce 42 per cent of it power from clean energy sources.
