Indian integrated power company, Cennergi, Tata Power’s joint-venture with Exxaro Resources in South Africa, has announced that its 134MW Amakhala Emoyeni Wind Farm has achieved commercial operation
Cennergi, which is based in South Africa, is a 50:50 joint venture between mining group Exxaro Resources and Tata Power Company of India, through its subsidiary Khopoli Investments. Founded in 2012, the energy company now serves the markets in South Africa, Namibia and Botswana.
Cennergi was selected as the preferred bidder for two wind projects under the second window of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP) by the South African government.
Cennergi CEO Thomas Garner said, “The commissioning of Amakhala Emoyeni Wind Farm, Cennergi’s first operational asset is a culmination of many years of hard and dedicated work from the Cennergi team in partnership with its stakeholders. It marks the company’s start in growing its vision to be a leader in cleaner energy in Africa, thereby creating value for its stakeholders.”
The Amakhala Emoyeni Wind Farm project is a 134MW installed capacity wind farm located near the town of Bedford in the Eastern Cape. According to Cennergi, it has excellent wind resource and close proximity to infrastructure, most importantly the national grid. The project was developed by Windlab in 2010, from whom Cennergi later bought the rights.
Nordex was awarded the EPC and the O&M contracts for the project, which involved the installation of 56 Nordex 2.4MW N117 wind turbines.
