Solarcentury Africa, a joint venture between Momentous Energy and Solarcentury, has won a contract to install a 574 kWp roof PV solar system on a retail outlet in South Africa
Once completed, the solar system on Waterfall Mall in Rustenburg will become South Africa largest rooftop installation, according to Solarcentury Africa who was awarded the contract by the retail outlet's owner Growthpoint. Waterfall Mall will become JSE-listed Growthpoint's first property to benefit from a solar PV system.
Solarcentury Africa managing director Gareth Warner said, "The Waterfall Mall roof installation will be capable of generating enough energy to power the equivalent of 750 average-sized homes and offset 928 tonnes of carbon dioxide. It will also significantly cut Growthpoint's electricity cost which is critical at a time of rocketing fossil fuel prices in South Africa."
Growthpoint has a retail portfolio in South Africa of 43 properties covering close to one million square metres of retail space.
"More and more businesses are starting to recognise the many benefits of solar electricity. We are looking forward to developing more multi-MW programmes with businesses in southern Africa to help them cut their energy bills through solar," Warner added.
