SkyPower to develop 1GW of solar projects in Kenya

Solar energy project developer SkyPower has signed an agreement with the Kenyan Ministry of Energy and Petroleum to develop 1GW of solar projects

The projects are expected to be built in four phases across the East African nation over the next five years.

The agreement for US$2.2bn was signed at Nairobi, Kenya at the sixth annual Global Entrepreneurship Summit (GES).

SkyPower president Kerry Adler said, “Kenya has become an African hub for innovation and entrepreneurship, and SkyPower is proud to contribute to this unprecedented milestone in Kenya’s ambitious renewable energy plan. Our solar projects will help Kenya realise its electrification goals, support the development of the country’s renewable energy industry and help the development of strong communities.”

Henry Rotich, cabinet secretary to the Kenyan minster for energy and petroleum, said that the investment would create more than 25,000 jobs in five years in Kenya, include 200MW of fabrication and assembly facilities as well as focus on training, research and development.
