Scatec Solar to build 50MW solar power plant in Ghana

Norway’s Scatec Solar has won a contract from the Ghanian government to construct a US$95mn 50MW photovoltaic (PV) solar power plant in the country

According to monthly publication PV Magazine, the solar power project will be located in northern Ghana and has been scheduled to become operational by 2015.

“The project will be Africa’s second largest solar farm,” Scatec Solar said. The company recently constructed a 75MW PV solar power plant in South Africa.  

Scatec Solar director of Ghana operations, Fred Nuerte Nuer, said, “We have engaged with the Ghana Energy Commission and the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC). All efforts from these institutions will help Scatec Solar’s plant to come onstream as planned.”

Earlier this month, Scatec Solar met with senior executives in Africa’s energy sector to discuss opportunities in renewable energy. The company has estimated that the African continent would require investments of about US$100bn in solar power projects over the next decade to switch from conventional energy.

According to the World Bank, currently just 29 per cent of the population in sub-Saharan Africa have access to a steady and reliable power source.
