Samsung launches solar-powered school facility in South Africa

Samsung has built a solar-powered classroom, equipped with Internet, in a shipping container in rural South Africa

The company claimed in a statement that the school has solar panels on the roof that could generate nine hours of electricity a day, which is enough power needed to run the electronic equipment inside.

The classroom is equipped with a 1.27 metre-long electronic board, Samsung’s Internet-enabled solar-powered notebooks, Samsung Galaxy tablets, and Wi-Fi cameras. The portable classroom measures almost more than 12 metres in length and can fit up to 21 students at a time. The company said that the school could be moved by truck so that children in other remote areas, with little or no access to electricity, could benefit from the curriculum and connectivity.

A Samsung statement noted, “Solar panels on the roof and sides are made from a rubber-like substance, rather than conventional materials, so the structure can be transported without the panels breaking. The structure also has insulation, as well as a ventilation system, to maintain a comfortable temperature.”

Samsung said it has an aim to reach some five million students in Africa by 2015 with solar-powered portable schools.
