The Nyabarongo River Hydropower Plant in Rwanda has been prepared to begin producing 28MW of power by November 2014
Construction of the plant began in 2010 and the Rwandan government has liaised with several companies to develop the power plant. The Nyabarongo dam comprises two generators, each capable of producing the power of 14MW, said officials from the government.
Once operational, the water from the dam will contribute to developing economic activities in the area, and attempt to reduce electricity deficits in Rwanda. Currently, only a portion the country’s 11.78mn citizens have access to electricity, said government officials. The government is intensifying efforts to increase power generation in the country by developing renewable energy projects.
