Rwanda signs solar power deal with Dutch firm

The Rwandan government has signed a US$23mn solar energy deal with Dutch company GigaWatt Global that will involve the generation of 8.5MW of electricity

The deal will include a power purchasing agreement between the government and GigaWatt Global which will be expected to help Rwnada meet its growing power demand.

Rwandan energy and water state minister Emma Francoise Isumbingabo said, “This agreement comes at a time when the government is looking at ways to achieve the Vision 2020 in which energy sufficiency plays an important role.”

According to the agreement, GigaWatt Global will run the financing and construction of the solar plant in the district of Rwamagana, near Kigali city.

Gigawatt Global vice president Chaim Motzen said that the project will be able to post 8.5MW to the national grid within the next 11 months, with financing raised through equity and debts.
