Renewable energy in South Africa is gathering momentum, with the announcement of a new 300MW wind farm under development near the agricultural region of Caledon in the southern Western Cape province.

South Africa is the 30th place in the world to have a detailed map of the country’s wind resources thanks to Risø DTU, Denmarks National laboratory for Sustainable Energy. The map shows the best locations for wind turbines and is a prerequisite for funding wind farms.

The Ugandan government says the country has vast renewable energy resources for energy production and biomass alone can produce an estimated 1, 650 megawatts of electricity if exploited.

Alstom Hydro, in consortium with Andritz Hydro, was awarded recently a contract with Namibia’s state-owned power utility Nam Power for the supply of the electro-mechanical equipment and penstocks for a new 92MW turbine-generator unit at Ruacana power plant in Namibia.

The TREE project (Transfer Renewable Energy & Efficiency), initiated in 2008 by the Berlin-based Renewables Academy (RENAC), supports climate change capacity building for developing and emerging countries.
