Morocco has awarded a US$1bn contract to a ACWA-led consortium for the construction of a solar power plant

The project, which will be built in southern Morocco, will entail the construction of a 160MW solar power plant at an estimated cost of US$1bn and will attempt to help the country towards its ambitious goal of increasing its installed renewable energy capacity to 42 per cent by 2020.

A Moroccon ministry source said, “The consortium which had bid for the project consisted of ACWA and two more Spanish companies - ARIES IS and TKK EE.

“The plant will be located in the south of the Morocco, on 2,500 ha of land near the desert-bordering town of Ouarzazate. The construction will begin by the end of 2012.

“Tenders for the contract were judged by the Moroccan Solar Energy Agency, which finally selected the ACWA-led consortium over three other strong contenders,” the source added.

Moroccan Solar Energy Agency head, Mustapha Bakkoury, said that the ACWA-led team had put forward the “best technical and financial offer”.

Bakkoury added that he hoped that solar energy production in Morocco would reach 2,000MW by 2020 and account for more than 38 per cent of the country’s energy consumption.
