Sesam Energetics 1 Ltd, a local renewable energy company in Uganda, announced a definitive collaboration agreement with US based Taylor Biomass Energy LLC, to build and operate a waste to energy a $160mn plant at Lubya- Lugala -Masanafu on Sentama road near Kampala
According to the press statement issued to the press by the CEO of the Sesam Energetics Dr Noah Maalanti, the proposed project will utilize proprietary Taylor Biomass Energy Technology , an Integrated Sorting Separating Recycling and Gasification System together with a combined cycle power island to generate 40 MW of green electricity.
This agreement marks the existence of a new entity Taylor Biomass Energy Uganda that will conclude all the projects execution instruments including power purchase agreement with the Uganda Electricity Transmission Company (UETCL), and the Municipal Solid Waste Managements Contracts.
According to the feasibility studies done by the project promoters, the plant will recycle almost 1,030 tonnes daily of municipal sold waste from Kampala city and the surrounding Wakiso district to generate renewable clean energy for over 35,000 homes.
Jobs
The project will provide over 400 jobs and 11,000 indirect jobs and will save the environment about three million tonnes of greenhouse gaseous emissions annually.
Within the next six months, Taylor Biomass Uganda is to conclude the Power Purchase Agreement, the Waste Management Contract and secure the necessary finances and d begin constructing the recycling plant.
Taylor Biomass Energy LLC USA, the technical partner in business, is currently undertaking a similar project in Montgomery, New York for which it has secured loan guarantees from the US government in excess of $100mn.
Cash grants
The company is also expecting cash grants to the tune of $30mn from the US Federal government.
The Taylor Biomass Energy project in Uganda is the first of its kind in Africa and will act as prototype for similar waste to energy plants in other African countries.
