Construction on Djibouti’s first solar power plant has begun, following the laying of the foundation stone by President Ismail Omar Guelleh
The 300MW plant will be constructed in six stages, each adding 50MW of power. The plant will be located in Grand Bara, southern Djibouti.
The development of this solar power plant is the result of a partnership between the government and German renewable energy firm Green Enesys. The project costs US$390mn and is being financed through a Programme Partnership Agreement.
Around 200 jobs will be created during the construction phase of the plant, but upon completion, the project will employ 60 people on a permanent basis.
Djibouti is being supplied power mainly through renewable energy sources. The new project is part of the government strategy to cut costs and support the energy target of the government to supply power throughout the East African nation using clean energy sources only. In fact, Djibouti is known to have among the highest geothermal potential in the world.
With economic growth levels rising, mainly due to the growth of the maritime and logistics sector, Djibouti is in need of stable and sustained power supply.
