Lake Turkana wind farm construction imminent

The Lake Turkana wind project has signed a deal to sell power to Kenya Power over 20 years at US9.37 cents/kWh

This deal means that the 300 MW project, which is being developed by a consortium of African and European companies, will be able to produce wind power without having to rely on subsidies.

The project, the financing of which is already secured, will see 365 wind turbines built in the Lake Turkana region.

Construction will begin once risk guarantees from lending agencies IDA and Miga are finalised, potentially as early as August 2012, according to ESI Africa.

The first phase of the project involves the construction of a 204km supply road that will allow trucks to deliver all of the necessary materials from Mombasa to Turkana.

One turbine will be erected per day with all turbines being put in place within a year.

The project, which will cost $728 million plus $177 million for the 428km transmission line, is expected to begin delivering power to the grid by the end of 2013.
