China’s Powerway to invest in solar project in Zimbabwe

Powerway South Africa, a subsidiary of the Chinese Powerway Renewable Energy Company, plans to invest US$160mn to construct a 100MW solar power plant in Zimbabwe

According to a media report, Powerway would develop the plant in partnership with local renewables company Mobility Holdings.

Charles Domingo, MD, Powerway SA, said, “The response we got from the local authorities is very encouraging and we hope to finalise the necessary paperwork so that the project can commence in the next few months.

“We also hope to engage your government with a view to ensure that the 100MW that we expect to generate will be fed into the national grid in order to reduce the power deficit Zimbabwe is currently faced with.”

The report added that the project is expected to occupy about 400ha, and although officials have not yet disclosed the location for the plant, sources said that it is likely to be located about 150km to 200km from capital Harare.

Bernard Matshiya, operating manager of Mobility Holdings, added, “At the moment we have partnered on this solar farm project but in future we will look at other areas of renewable energy that we can also work together on in the hope of ensuring the country fully recovers from power and energy shortfalls”.
