German-American technology company Younicos has launched new microgrids which aim to combine low cost renewables with diesel in a single contract with flexible conditions

The company, along with its parent company Aggreko – the leading global provider of modular, mobile power, are launching a new microgrids as a service offer. This new modular and mobile approach can be beneficial for the customers around the globe. It will combine low-cost renewables, especially solar, with thermal generation and battery storage in one single contract with flexible conditions.

An initial project is now being equipped with a PV-plus-diesel hybrid system. With the help of this combination, there will be a reduction of 10 per cent in fuel costs. The mine will be powered by a 22MW diesel plant and a 7.5MW solar power resource.

Managing director of Aggreko, Karim Wazni, said, "With this new offering, we enable our customers to reduce their electricity costs through the use of cheaper solar energy. "

Wazni further added that the company aims to provide plug-and-play battery solutions for rental periods of a few months, allowing us to really leverage the different technologies, with each component being used more efficiently, while increasing overall resilience.

In the coming five years, integrated microgrid solutions will be available with rental durations, enabling customers to test new technology and adapt to a fast-evolving market. This modular offer is also flexible, and aims to be combined with other types of renewable generation, such as wind.

Managing director of global solutions, Aggreko, Dan Ibbetson, said, "This 'pay as you go' solution is a perfect example of the strengths of Aggreko and Younicos reinforcing each other.

The companies focus on reducing power costs and environmental footprint, while ensuring energy security and stability of supply to meet long-term commercial objectives, Ibbetson added.
