Toshiba Corporation signs MoU with Ethiopian Electric Power

Japanese multinational Toshiba Corporation has signed an MoU with Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP) to work on geothermal power projects in the East African country 

According to the MoU, the two entities would work on power generation projects and personnel development for the same. The agreement would enable Toshiba to draw on its longstanding experience and expertise in geothermal systems to contribute to projects in Ethiopia.

In particular, Toshiba would help develop and manufacture major equipment, create operation and management guidelines, cooperate in personnel development, and start a waste heat utilisation business, said company officials.

Though Ethiopia has abundant geothermal resources, which can generate upto 6,000MW of power, the country has not been able to explore and develop this form of energy. 90 per cent of its electricity is derived from hydroelectric sources.

With plans to increase its installed generating capacity to 37,000MW by 2037, the country hopes to harness as much as it can from geothermal energy to achieve this target, stated local reports.
