The Angolan government has planned to set up three new companies by March 2014 to manage the power sector in the country
According to the Angolan Press Agency, Angola’s minister of energy and water, João Baptista Borges, said one company will be solely responsible for managing infrastructures including dams and power stations, along with the production of electricity, while another will oversee the transportation network.
A third company will ensure the nationwide distribution of power in the coming days.
Angola’s electricity output was 1,200 MW in 2012. Earlier this year, the Angolan government had announced that it would invest US$17.7mn to increase the country’s electricity output to 6,200MW by 2017.
Currently, the National Company of Electricity (ENE) produces, transports and distributes power in Angola. The Luanda Electricity Supply Company (EDEL) is responsible for electricity distribution in the Luanda and Bengo provinces.
“We intend to establish an institutional design for the energy sector, which will be adjusted to the objectives outlined by the government for the future. Such a structure would help us provide good services and ensure skilful management of the infrastructure under construction,” said Borges.
