Tanzania has awarded a US$30mn contract to Finnish firm, Eltel Group, for the construction of an underground electrical transmission line in Dar es Salaam

Eltel will design and construct electrical cables to improve power reliability in Dar es Salaam in a project expected to be completed within the next two years.

The project will include the construction of a 132/33kV substation and the construction of a 132kV underground cable to connect Ilala Township and the new city centre substations.

It will also entail the establishment of a distribution system for Dar es Salaam and the reinforcement of the Sokoine and Kariakoo 33/11 kV substation.

“The objective is to improve reliability of power supply in the Dar es Salaam area by improving the transmission and distribution systems,” said Boniphace Njombe, acting managing director of Tanzania Electricity Supply Company.

The construction of a 100MW power generating plant in Dar es Salaam and a 60MW plant in Mwanza, western Tanzania is expected to curb the rampant outages.
