Solid waste power plant to be built in Nairobi suburb

German firm Sustainable Energy Management Company (SEMC) has said it will invest US$400mn into the construction of a solid waste recycling plant in Nairobi’s Dandora suburb

The plant, which will generate 70MW of power, will create 1,000 jobs, according to the firm’s managing partner Frank Masuhr. The plant will absorb 2,000 tonnes of solid waste daily, which will be used in power generation.

The German investors have been in discussions with the national government, Nairobi County government and the land ministry officials to accelerate the signing of the title deed to the Dandora project.

SEMC has also been involved in the funding of the Geothermal Energy Exploration at Bogoria-Silale in Baringo County at a cost of approximately US$108.9mn.

The funding will support exploration and generation of geothermal power and will contribute an additional 200MW to the national grid, supporting the national government’s initiative of increasing the size of the national grid to 5,000MW.

Officials at the German bank KFW said the project would be carried out through public-private partnerships.
