Siemens ties up Nigerian energy deals

Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Power has signed an agreement with German energy giant Siemens AG to strengthen the strategic partnership between the two entities

As a result of the agreement, Siemens has agreed to build up a new service workshop for heavy duty gas turbines in Nigeria and will support the country with a study on the integration of renewables into its energy mix.

Siemens will also consider offering support on a case-by-case basis to finance power plant projects in Nigeria.

Siemens AG CEO of the energy sector Michael Suess said, “The agreements shall be mutually beneficial to the economy of Nigeria via significant advancements in the power sector as well as for the business of Siemens in one of the most important markets in Africa.

“Lagos, as one of the fastest growing mega cities in the world, is seeking for a significant improvement in its power supply.”

The signing followed the visit of a high-ranking political and industrial delegation from Nigeria, which included Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, to a Siemens’ gas turbine factory in German capital Berlin in late April 2012.

Along with the government deals, the Nigerian company Scanpower and Siemens also signed a technical partnership agreement for the construction of a 1,600MW gas turbine power station at Lekki in Lagos state.

“The decision of Scanpower and its joint-venture partners to build, together with Siemens as technical partner, a modern and environmentally-friendly gas turbine power station, is an essential contribution to increase the power generation capacity and the security of power supply under the framework of the privatisation of the energy sector in Nigeria,” remarked Suess.
