Rusumo power project construction edges closer

Construction of the Regional Rusumo Falls Hydroelectric Project is moving into its implementation phase following the signing of two contracts

The two contracts, reported by The New Times to total US$75 mn, have been signed in Kigali, Rwanda for the initial construction works of the Regional Rusumo Falls Hydroelectric Project, which is estimated to generate around 80MW of electricity.

The contracts were announced at a signing ceremony held by Rusumo Power Comany through the Nile Equatorial Lakes Subsidiary Action program Coordination Unit and the Regional Rusumo Falls Hydroelectric Project.

Both packages were signed with a consortium of partners including Jiangxi Water and Hydropower Construction Company Ltd Joint Venture of P.R China, Consortium Rusomo Falls Andritz Hydro GmbH (Germany) and Andritz Hydro PVT Ltd (India).

CP1, which includes civil works, design, supply and installation of hydro-mechanical equipment on the dam, waterways, power stations and other civil engineering work, was agreed between RPCL and CGCOC Group - Jiangxi Water and Hydropower Construction Company Ltd Joint Venture of P.R China.

CP2, which comprises the design, supply, installation and commissioning of electro-mechanical equipment and mechanical and electrical works for power generation was signed between RPCL and the Consortium Rusomo Falls Andritz Hydro GmbH (Germany) and Andritz Hydro Pvt Ltd (India).

The civil works will start at the Rusumo site in early 2017, and will continue for three years. The hydroelectrity generated by the Rusumo site will be shared equally between Burundi, Rwanda and Tanzania. 

The governments of Burundi, Rwanda and Tanzania have jointly agreed to develop the project and manage the plant. The Rusumo Power Company Limited is to be owned by the three countries.
