Retailer saves on IT equipment

Kenyan regional retailer Nakumatt Holdings recently rolled out uninterruptible power supplies (UPSes) supplied by APC by Schneider Electric, allowing improved protection of its high-end servers in the event of power failures

Equipping for support According to Jonathan Duncan, director for the Central and North East Africa region at Schneider Electric, the frequent power outages experienced across Kenya have created the need for local organisations to install equipment that can assist them in shutting down servers and other computers safely and timeously during a power outage.

“By enabling businesses to avoid an abrupt shutdown when the power goes out, APC has allowed them to save costs in terms of both hardware failure and the loss of data,” he explains.

“It also helps with a reduction in the costs associated with machine maintenance and can assist in improving production through better uptime and availability. Downtime is intolerable to organisations like Nakumatt Holdings, reinforcing the need for constant power availability and reliability.” Francis Omondi, Nakumatt Holdings systems administrator, explains that the company has been running APC Smart-UPS devices since the end of last year, to safeguard it from surges, spikes and power outages.

“Prior to installing the Smart-UPS UPSes, we found that power anomalies were destroying the power supplies of some of our IT equipment. Based on this issue, we decided to implement the APC units in order to protect our servers, desktop computers and storage solutions from any further failure.”
