New thermal plant to boost Zambia's power supply

EMCO Energy Zambia Limited is to construct a 600MW thermal power plant in Sinazongwe at a cost of US$690mn, which will help in the countrys bid to alleviate the regions current power deficit

According to the Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) environmental impact assessment (EIA) report, the power generated from phase one of the plant will be supplied to Zambia Electricity Supply Corporation (ZESCO) while the power from phase two will be supplied to a variety of customers in the region.

"EMCO Energy Zambia Limited is a company incorporated in Zambia to implement a coal-fired power generation plant in the Vwekenya area of Sinazongwe district of Zambia. The project is expected to cost $690mn," the EIA reads.

"Total power generation will be about 600MW to be executed in two phases each of 300MW. The generated electricity will be evacuated via a 330kV transmission line and fed into the ZESCO-operated national grid."

The coal-fired plant, which will have a lifespan of 30 years, is expected to be implemented around three-and-a-half years after its approval from ZEMA.

The project will result in a number of households in Vwekenya being relocated, for which compensation will be provided.
