Liberian President unveils 10MW power plant

President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf inaugurates a 10MW Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO) power plant in Bushrod Island, outside Monrovia

A US$27m power plant was unveiled at the Liberia Electricity Corporation last week (13 September). The project has been funded by the Japanese government through the Japan International Cooperration Agency (JICA). 

Sirleaf, while commissioning the power plant, addressed the community saying, "we drove here today to tell you that we are delivering on our promises we made." 

In addition to the new HFO power plant, situated in Snow Hill, Gardnerville, by December 2016, the Mount Coffee hydropower plant rehabilitation project will also be online, increasing overall capacity. 

However, officials from LEC had admitted that the present power itility is operating below 28MW, but said that by September 2016, an additional 10MW will be in peration with the assistance of the Japanese government. 

LEC continued by saying that the public electricity firm is aiming to achieve a total of 88MW and an increase of 24MW over pre-war status.
