Globeq’s new power plant in Côte d’Ivoire to commence operations in 2015

Power company Globeleq said its new 427 MW power plant project in Côte d’Ivoire has been scheduled to commence commercial operations in early 2015

Earlier this year, the UK-based power company which has interests spread across Africa and the Americas, began expanding its 288 MW Azito natural gas-fired power plant near Abidjan. It is expected to have an additional capacity of 139 MW.   

According to Globeq, the combined cycle technology installed at the plant will use waste heat from the existing gas turbine exhausts to produce steam that will drive the new generator. It will not require any additional fuel to increase the capacity.  

“The new steam turbine and electric generator for the project will be transported to site during the first half of 2014,” Globeleq said.

Once operational, the additional electricity will be sold to the government of Côte d’Ivoire through a 20-year concession agreement.

Hyundai Engineering and Construction is the main contractor for the expansion of the Azito power plant.  

Globeleq vice president for the engineering and construction division, Jake McConnell, said, “We are really excited about the progress made at Azito. There has been excellent cooperation and support for this project. We are committed to ensure that the facility will start generating reliable electricity by 2015.”
