A hydropower project in Ethiopia, with the capacity to generate 1,870 MW of electricity, has been scheduled to commence operations in September 2014

According to weekly newspaper Addis Fortune, Ethiopian minister of water, irrigation and energy (MoWIE), Alemayehu Tegenu said about 80 per cent of the construction of the Gilgel Gibe III hydropower project has been completed.

“Other power plant projects, including the Adama II Wind Farm and Genale Dam, are in the process of getting constructed,” added Tegenu.

The power projects across Ethiopia have been aimed at enhancing the country’s electricity exporting capacity. The country recently embarked on a 100 MW power export deal with Sudan.

This deal has been estimated to generate millions of dollars in revenue for Ethiopia in the coming days, according to MoWIE.

Ethiopia also has a power supply agreement with Kenya.

“The Ethiopia- Kenya power transmission line is being installed and will be completed over the next two years,” said Tegenu.
