Eskom signs MoU with Anglo American Inyosi Coal for supply of coal

South African power utility Eskom has signed an MoU with Anglo American Inyosi Coal for the supply of coal to the Kusile power station

The Kusile power station is owned by Eskom and currently under construction at Mpumalanga. Eskom is expected to complete the Kusile power station by 2018, eventually constituting the last stage of its expansion programme.

Tshediso Matona, CEO of Eskom, said, “The MoU is about how we co-operate to progress the economy and the country to a bright future. Eskom and Anglo American are key pillars of the South African economy and we cannot fail the country.”

According to Eskom officials, the MoU will pave the way for the two companies to negotiate and conclude the commercial and technical aspects of the project, while further engaging on the strategic empowerment imperatives and objectives to achieve the Public Finance Management Act conditions.

Eskom generates approximately 95 per cent of the electricity used in South Africa and approximately 45 per cent of the electricity used in Africa for generation, transmission and distribution of electricity to industrial, mining, commercial, agricultural and residential projects.
