Edenville Energy to construct 100MW power plant in Tanzania

UK-based Edenville Energy has announced plans to build a 100MW power station at its Rukwa Coal Project site in Tanzania

According to Edenville Energy, the power generated from this project will be added to the upcoming section of the national grid.

Earlier this year, the Tanzanian government had announced that it intended to commence construction of the Western Power Line between Mbeya and Sumbawanga by 2014, which would increase the nation’s power generation capacity to 2,780MW by 2015. Tanzania's current level of power output is 1,438MW.

The new national grid project has been scheduled for completion in 2016.

The Rukwa coal fields comprise three areas of deposits which are 90 per cent owned and operated by Edenville Energy since 2010. The field has been estimated to contain 57.5mn tonnes of coal.

Edenville Energy chairperson Sally Schofield said, “The accelerated progress of the Western Power Line has given us the opportunity to develop a large power station, using Edenville's entire coal resource, which would feed directly into the new grid infrastructure.”

Schofield added that the company saw potential to export power directly into Zambia, or other neighbouring states, using the existing 66kV interconnector at Sumbawanga.
