Clark Energy buys GE’s Jenbacher business in South Africa

GE’s service business for the Jenbacher gas engines has been present in South Africa since 2009. GE Jenbacher engines are used as packaged generator sets and as cogeneration units for the efficient generation of power and heat.

Currently, there are about 80MW of GE's Jenbacher gas engines installed in South Africa. These units are operating on natural gas and landfill gas, alongside those produced through industrial processes, Clark Energy said.

GE Jenbacher’s official sales representative in South Africa was Agaricus Trading.

“The acquisitions provide us significant opportunities for further growth from securing contract service revenue and sales in the gas to power segment,” Clark Energy said. It did not, however, disclose any financial details of the deal.

According to the company, Clarke Energy has also been awarded Jenbacher gas engines distributor and service provider rights in Mozambique and Botswana.

Clarke Energy chief executive officer Jamie Clarke said, “The strategic acquisition of GE’s service hub and Agaricus Trading will help us support Jenbacher customers in sales, engineering, installation and maintenance of their gas fuelled generation equipment.”

GE Power & Water-Distributed Power business chief commercial officer, Darryl Wilson, said, “Given Clarke Energy’s strong presence in Africa, our decision to sell our South Africa service business along with the company’s acquisition of Agaricus Trading, helps us meet the local demand for clean industrial and municipal on-site power solutions in a better manner.”
