Brazil keen to invest in Tanzania’s energy sector

Brazil has announced that it is interested in investing in Tanzania’s renewable energy sector

Brazil’s ambassador to Tanzania, Carlos Alfonso Puente, made the statement during his meeting with Tanzanian minister for energy and minerals, Sospeter Muhongo. Puente told the minister that his country’s extensive knowledge and experience in the production of electricity, especially hydropower and bio-electricity could be used to help Tanzania.

“Tanzania is embarking on an industrial development. This process requires reliable and affordable power supply generated from various sources,” the Brazilian ambassador said. He pointed out that Brazil has large companies producing hydropower within and outside the country, with long experience reaching 20 to 40 years.

He added that Brazil was interested in investing in bio-ethanol energy, the production of electricity using sugarcane residue. Being a top producer and exporter of sugarcane in the world, Brazil can help transform Tanzania’s energy sector through bio-energy, he said.

“We welcome the new investments from Brazil,” said Muhongo acknowledging that Brazil has knowledge, experience and great potential, particularly in the areas of hydropower production and bio-energy. He also stated that Tanzania’s doors are open for investors, especially for the renewable energy.

The minister added that the Brazilian government has also expressed willingness to work with Tanzania for the construction of a crude oil pipeline from Uganda to Tanga in Tanzania.
