Angola to invest US$4.09 billion in 2,060 MW dam project

The Angolan government has announced plans to invest up to US$4.09bn for constructing the Laúca Dam in the Kwanza Norte province, which is expected to generate 2,060 MW of hydroelectric power

According to the Angola Press Agency, the country’s minister of energy and water, João Baptista Borges said construction of point tunnels to divert water for the planned dam project has already commenced and will be completed by March this year.

The dam is expected to start producing power from Q3 2017.

The minister also announced that rehabilitation works at the Cambambe Dam have begun and that this project will be completed by end of 2015.

“With the conclusion of this project, the Cambambe Dam will produce 960 MW of hydroelectric power from 2016,” said Borges.

The Angolan Ministry of Energy and Water has embarked on projects to revamp the country’s hydropower infrastructure. This includes the rehabilitation of the 60 MW Gove Dam in the central Huambo province and the Matala Dam in Huila province.

The rehabilitation works for the Lomaum Dam is expected to be completed in April 2014.

Angola plans to have a power generation capacity of 9,000 MW by 2025.
