Oil company, Chevron South Africa, has funded a new US$67,000 library at Du Noon Primary School in Cape Town, which opened recently
The fully stocked library was officially opened by Western Cape MEC for Education, Donald Grant. Chevron South Africa’s funding covered the construction and establishment of the library, as well as the appointment of a full-time librarian to manage the facility. According to Grant, the importance attached to the development of young learners’ literacy skills through reading books should not be underestimated.
“Literacy is one of the more important skills our children need in terms of their education and is the foundation upon which all further learning is built. Therefore, it is essential that we promote reading and writing in our schools and communities - and to ensure that every young child has access to books and reading material,” he said. “I would like to thank Chevron sincerely for their role in initiating this project and for the books and IT equipment they have sourced for this school.”
In its capacity as a committed South African corporate citizen, Chevron agrees that improving literacy is vital, and has chosen to support government by establishing new and refurbishing existing school libraries. The support forms part of the company’s Energy for Learning Programme, a global Chevron initiative designed to help disadvantaged people work towards a brighter future through education.
The school had no library before this project was initiated. The establishment of this library included the installation of IT systems and processes, the provision of audiovisual equipment, and the stocking of the library with books aligned to the curriculum.
