Namibia hydrogen project marks another milestone

Hyphen Hydrogen Energy (Hyphen), a project development company that operates green hydrogen production facilities, welcomed a visit from Namibian President Nangolo Mbumba at its Green Hydrogen project being delivered near Lüderitz

While at the site, the President inaugurated the commencement of the meterological measurement campaign at one of the 10 new meteorological masts (MetMasts) that have been erected. The MetMasts are packed with sensor and data collection equipment and have been deployed in addition to the refitting with new measuring equipment of an existing MetMast acquired by Hyphen from NamPower. Together, 11 MetMasts, which stand 120 m-tall, collect data to enable Hyphen to precisely model the energy yield of the wind and solar resources. This information will be used to optimise the design of the project.

A significant project in southern Africa

At the ribbon cutting ceremony, President Mbumba stated, “Namibia has made great strides to become the frontrunner in green hydrogen and ammonia production. The inauguration of Hyphen’s MetMasts signifies the next and essential phase to develop this Green Hydrogen project for and in Namibia.”

According to Hyphen, the Presidential visit serves as a testament to the importance of the project to Namibia and southern Africa. As sub-Saharan Africa’s largest, most advanced and only fully-vertical integrated green hydrogen project, it is expected to have a transformative impact on the region as well as on Namibia’s economy and citizens.

“We are appreciative of His Excellencies support for this transformative project and for honouring us today by officially launching our resource measurement campaign,” remarked Marco Raffinetti, CEO of Hyphen. “This is a very ambitious project as evidenced by the fact that we believe that this MetMast campaign is one of the largest single wind field measurement campaigns ever undertaken globally.”
