Zambia President Michael Sata has launched a road construction and rehabilitation project named Link Zambia 8000
According to a statement issued by the presidential special assistant for press and public relations, George Chellah, the project would result in the construction of around 2,290 km of roads in the first phase estimated to cost about US$1.5bn.
The second phase would cover 3,049km of the road network worth about US$2.2bn. The third phase involves upgrading of 2,862km of the road network and would cost about US$1.76bn.
The three phases of Link Zambia 8000 are expected to be carried out over a five-year period.
"’The launch of this project signals the beginning of the revolution to modernise Zambia and convert it into a complete land-linked country. This also fulfils one of the promises made by President Sata to the nation, during his address to parliament last year that government would embark on the construction of various roads which include the Lusaka-Leopards Hill road project via Chiawa to Chirundu,’’ the statement read.
The President commissioned the commencement of works to upgrade the Lusaka-Leopards Hill road project through Chiawa to Chirundu, which would go over Chongwe river and connect to Feira, through Luangwa Bridge. The road would also provide a link to Kasisi, Chipembi, Chalimbana and Palabana.
The road-link project underscores the Patriotic Front government’s desire and determination to develop the state of infrastructure in the country, especially roads, as enshrined in the ruling party’s manifesto.
