Uganda government starts construction of US$476 million highway

Construction of the four-lane Kampala-Entebbe Expressway, which will link Kampala to Entebbe Airport, has started after it was commissioned early last week

Applauding the Chinese government for its investment in the project, Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni said, “The US$476mn project is co-financed by the Exim Bank of China and the government of Uganda. The grant from the Chinese government, which will work to promote trade and industry in Uganda, has been much appreciated by our country.”

The loan is repayable within a 40-year period including two per cent annual interest. The 51km highway will also connect to Munyonyo, a prominent Kampala suburb, located on the shores of Lake Victoria.

Ugandan minister of works and transport, Abraham Byandala, said, “The road will have 15 overpass bridges, 15 underpass bridges, two swampy crossing bridges and three interchanges at Busega, Kajjansi and Abayita Ababiri along Entebbe road.

“The road will help catalyse local development and speed movement of transit to the airport.”

Entebbe road has been one of the most congested roads in Uganda. The contract was awarded to China Communication Construction Company, which had also constructed the Soroti-Lira Road.

Meanwhile, the government has also completed plans to upgrade the Masaka-Bukakata road in central Uganda.
