The design of the World Bank-financed elevated highway project in Nairobi has been made public
The road, which will come up on the Mombasa Road-Uhuru Highway and Waiyaki Way, will ease traffic congestion in one of the busiest areas of the Kenyan capital.
Close to US$200 million is being spent on the project by the World Bank, which is expected start in January 2013 and be functional by 2015.
Senior urban highway design engineer Asoka Prasantha said, “The Nyayo stadium roundabout will be demolished to pave way for a single-point diamond interchange. Motorists can use the existing road, driving past the roundabout, and head towards the city.”
According to officials of the Otieno Odongo Engineering Consultants, the proposed design would get rid of roundabouts between Nyayo Stadium and Westlands, which currently cause a lot of congestion.
COWI Consulting Engineers and Planners project team leader Brian Segar remarked, “The total road improvement will cover a 12km stretch from the Likoni Road junction at Ole Sereni Hotel to James Gichuru junction off Waiyaki Way.”
Speaking about property owners who might be affected by the project, Kenya National Highways Authority director general Eng. Meshack Kidenda noted, “There are property owners who may be affected by the project, but we are restricting ourselves to the current road reserves, which are available on the 12km stretch. No owner should be worried.”
