Murray & Roberts Infrastructure wins two road contracts in South Africa

South African construction company Murray & Roberts has been awarded its first roadworks rehabilitation contracts in the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal for the South African National Roads Agency SOC Ltd (SANRAL)

The first contract, which began in August 2014, is a 22 km stretch from 33 to km 55, which is approximately the distance from the Umzinto River to the Umkomaas River. The project is set to be completed by December 2015.

The second contract, which commenced in September 2014, is a 14.5 km stretch from 2.7 km to 17.2 km, which is from where the N2 meets the Umlass Canal and is referred to as the Spaghetti Junction. Roadworks are set to be completed by November 2015.

“There are two contracts that have been awarded back-to-back to Murray & Roberts Infrastructure. While the coordination and planning of these simultaneous projects represents a challenge in terms of logistics, it is a significant testament to the capabilities and expertise of Murray & Roberts Infrastructure,” said Bennie Hook, project manager.

Commenting on the pavement specification, Hook added that the projects consist of rehabilitation work on the old road surface. This involved milling out a layer of the existing asphalt and replacing it with new material followed by a final UltraThin Friction Course (UTFC) layer on top.
