Nigerian government approves new city and railways

Nigeria’s federal government has approved the construction of a new city that will be located in the Federal Capital Territory and will mark the 100th anniversary of the country’s amalgamation in 1914

The government also approved US$3mn for the construction of standard gauge rail lines from Ajaokuta-Lokoja-Abaji-Abuja and a feasibility study for a coastal rail line from Benin-Sapele-Warri-

Yenagoa-Port Harcourt-Aba-Uyo-Calabar-Obudu. The contracts are worth $2.1mn and $916,000 respectively.

The framework for the celebration of the centenary was drawn up by a committee headed by Secretary of the Government of the Federation (SFG), Chief Anyim Pius Anyim, according to Thisday.

Labaran Maku, Nigeria’s minister of information and national orientation, told State House correspondents that the plan had been approved by the council.

Maku said that the new city would be carved out of the nation's capital "to create the enabling environment for new infrastructure development."
